摘要:
Energy technologies are an important and expanding part of scientific research in the 21st century. There is a great and pressing need to improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions by carbon capture, store cleaner fuels such as H2 in a safe manner, improve battery technologies, and generate fuels in a renewable fashion. In this presentation I will outline how computational research at UCL is improving materials and composites for these applications. I will discuss has metal doping can strongly improve the gas-storage (both CO2 and H2) properties of carbon-based materials, how nanostructuring can modify the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 and the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 and graphitic carbon nitride, and how the defect chemistry of LiBH4 can influence the Li-ion mobility, with significant implications for applications as a solid-state Li-ion electrolyte.
个人简介:
Dr. Stephen Shevlin is a research fellow at UCL, and is an expert in computational materials science and simulations for energy applications. He graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Master’s degree in Theoretical Physics in 1997 and obtained his PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from University College London in 2001. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at IBM Zurich in Switzerland and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the U.S.A. before taking up his current position in the UK. He has published more than 25 papers in the field of nanostructures, hydrogen storage, photocatalysis and carbon dioxide capture, and given more than 30 presentations, including several invited ones. Research papers on these topics have being published in high-impact journals such as Nature Materials, Physical Review Letters, Chemical Society Reviews and the Journal of Physical Chemistry. He has authored one patent on dielectric materials.
